In July 1956, Chess Records issued what was arguably the hardest-hitting Chuck Berry LP of them all, Chuck Berry Is On Top. The man himself started the year appearing as both a performer and actor in the Hollywood feature film Go, Johnny, Go, which was named after a line in one of his own songs. The oldest song on the album was from May 1955, the newest from February 1959, but nine out of the twelve came from 1958, and indeed, any Chuck Berry fan who had been religiously buying each Chess 45 and EP would have owned every track already, except for the instrumental, Blues For Hawaiians. Nevertheless, viewed as a collec... + INFO

After their success with Blind Lemon Jefferson, Chicago's Paramount was scouting for more male blues talent, and they found it in 1926 in a man called Blind Blake (1893-1933), a sophisticated guitar player who was the antithesis of Delta blues. In fact, Blake soon became Paramount's best-selling and most recorded artist, with over a hundred sides to his name. Blake-one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time-is best known for his development of the "ragtime" guitar style, the sheer complexity of which has baffled would-be imitators for the past eight decades. Johnny Burch is probably best-known for songs he wrote in 1963 for Georgie Fame such as "In The Meantime" and "Preach and Teach". This was at a time when the boundaries between modern jazz, rhythm and blues and beat music were being broken down at such places as the Flamingo and the Marquee. For a few months, Burch was leader of a group that included several musicians who found fame in the blues and rock scene of the late 60s such as Graham Bond, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker.
