Russell, Arthur - Another Thought (2lp)
Arc Light | LP | 25 €

Here's the first ever vinyl pressing of Arthur Russell's 'Another Thought', a posthumous collection compiled from 800 tape reels recorded between 1982 and '90. What's immediately surprising is how coherent it sounds as an album. The performances often hushed, sparse and soulful, largely performed solo with a handful of notable exceptions including the superb use of brass and conga on 'This Is How We Walk On The Moon'.The main focus is on Russell's idiosyncratic cello style, conjuring up toe tapping but melancholic grooves from clever booming loops and nimbly picked burblings, and his sweetly soulful voice cutting through with a smooth vulnerability that's part Jeff Buckley, part Elliott Smith, part Mark Sandman. It's easy to compare him to those who've come since and been inspired by him - David Thomas Broughton is another example - but Russell really was a one of a kind, and as far as posthumous odds-and-sods collections go this is remarkable. Soak it up.
